Nevada City has a deep gold mining history and wonderful diverse architecture as men came from the East, Chile, China, England and all around the world for the discovery of gold in 1848.
It is located an hour west of Tahoe and is considered the gateway to the Tahoe National Forest at a 2400 foot elevation.
It was settled in 1849 and the city has a Victorian flair. Many homeowners boast about their homes’ history and take great pride in restoring each Victorian back to its prime in gold rush history. There is quite a variety of homes to be found, from modern homes, Victorians, farmhouses, apartment complexes and everything in between.
The historic 1865 Nevada Theater is the oldest theatre in California and many concerts and cultural events are held there throughout the year. Mark Twain lectured there back in his day. Herbert Hoover also called Nevada City home before he became president. The downtown area has been designated a national landmark and its history is quite evident in the buildings surrounding Broad Street. 93 buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A walking ghost tour is very popular with the tourists especially around Halloween.
You will also find award winning restaurants, wineries, bars, boutiques, antique and gift shops lining the streets. Nevada City is the county seat and government center for Nevada County.
There is so much to do in and around the town, rock climbing, kayaking, boating, swimming, fishing , hiking to name a few. Scotts Flat Lake is considered a high mountain lake with a beautiful campground and only 6 miles from downtown. Deer Creek runs right through the town and locals and visitors alike enjoy spending hot summer days by the water. Bring a gold
pan and try your luck along the creek! Early miner stories report a pound of gold a day was pulled from this creek. The city is called home by a number of outdoor loving people and artists who seek a healthy lifestyle combined with the slower pace of a small town. If you desire a day where you need the hustle and bustle Sacramento is only and hour away and the Bay Area just two-and-a-half.
With so many activities and a lifestyle rich in recreation, culture and history a new homeowner might not want to leave the area for a very long time.
Annual Nevada City Events include:
Mardi Gras, Foreign Car Shows, Soap box Derby, Bicycle Classic, Summer Nights Street Fair, Constitution Day Parade, Film Festival, and Victorian Christmas to name a few.
